Membership Information

GAPD Membership Categories

Active

A practicing dentist may be considered for Active membership provided the applicant:

  • Is actively involved exclusively in pediatric dentistry by way of practice and/or research and/or teaching of and/or administration in an educational institution within the geographic confines of this Academy, and
  • Meets the educational requirements of the American Dental Association for the announcement of practice in pediatric dentistry
  • Is a member of and maintains membership in the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry

Active members shall pay dues as provided in Chapter X, Section 2 of these Bylaws.

Associate

This category of membership is available, upon application, to the following individuals:

  • Practicing dentists who meet the educational requirements of the American Dental Association for the announcement of practice in pediatric dentistry, but do not reside within the geographic confines of this Academy, or
  • Practicing dentists who are Diplomates of or Board Eligible in one of the specialty areas of dentistry recognized by the American Dental Association other than pediatric dentistry, or
  • Practicing general practitioners who express a desire to treat children as a part of their practice, and whose interests are consistent with the overall mission of this Academy
  • Pediatric dentists on active duty with the Uniformed Services and stationed outside the United States
  • All pediatric dentists who are Associate members of this Academy must be members of and maintain membership in the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.

Associate members shall pay the same dues and fees as Active members.

Retired

This category of membership is available to former practicing pediatric dentists who:

  • Have voluntarily and completely retired from dental practice, teaching, and/or administration, and
  • Are not engaged in part-time practice or employed in a dental administrative or teaching capacity for which remuneration is received, and
  • If previously a member of this academy, have paid all dues and assessments through the calendar year in which application for Retired membership is made
  • Are members of and maintain membership in the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry

Retired members shall be exempt from payment of Academy dues.

Student

  • A Student member shall be an individual who is either a full-time or part-time predoctoral or postdoctoral student enrolled in an educational program in pediatric dentistry and accredited by the American Dental Association or its foreign equivalent.
  • Student members shall be exempt from payment of academy dues.

Affiliate

  • This category of membership is available, upon application, to all other individuals whose interests are consistent with the mission of the Academy.
  • Affiliate members shall pay the same dues and fees as Active members.

Life

This category of membership is available to Active and Retired members who:

  • Have been members in good standing for a total of thirty (30) years, excluding student years, and have reached the age of sixty-five (65) years, and
  • Must continue to fulfill the provisions set forth for an Active member and pay dues and assessments through the calendar year in which application for Life membership is made, or
  • Have left their practice or educational careers due to permanent medical disabilities and fulfill all other criteria except age or membership tenure.

Life members who derive some income from dentistry shall pay annual dues equal to fifty percent (50%) of the Active members’ dues. Life members who derive no income from dentistry shall pay no annual dues.

Benefits of Membership in GaAPD

Annual Meeting

Each year in January, the GAPD holds its annual meeting in conjunction with the Southeastern Society of Pediatric Dentistry’s CE meeting in Atlanta. As well as for their ability to promote group interaction and camaraderie, these meetings offer fellow members the opportunity to gain scientific information, the latest clinical techniques, practice management information, policy-making involvement for the specialty, and fellowship with colleagues.

    • Business Meeting: The Annual Business Meeting provides an opportunity for the officers and chairpersons to report the latest state and national policy-making developments of the society.
    • Scientific Program: Topics are chosen to reflect the latest clinical techniques and practice management information. Nationally renowned speakers share their knowledge and insights.
    • Social and Recreational: Events will be planned to help renew old friendships and start new ones.

Continuing Education

Members receive reduced registration fees for our CE course.

Publications and Media

  • Web site:The www.gaapd.org website is an attractive and easy-to-use resource for its members, patients, and their parents.
  • Special Media: GaAPD will provide occasional packets of important and useful information to its members in easy-to-use formats.

Professional Outreach

Professional outreach includes sharing information pertinent to children’s dental health with medical and dental colleagues.

Dental Care Programs

The GAPD committees provide interaction in many areas concerning issues that relate to the practice of pediatric dentistry in Georgia by keeping a close liaison relationship with the Georgia Dental Association, Georgia state government agencies, the Georgia Board of Dental Examiners, the Georgia Academy of Pediatrics, and the insurance industry on issues related to the oral health of children.

Child Advocacy

GAPD and its members maintain prominent roles on the boards of many child advocacy groups, including: Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition; Georgia Oral Health Coalition; Children’s Health lobby; and the Head Start Program.
